School Board Policy 402 addresses teaching sex education in Flagler’s schools. It states, “…In compliance with Florida Statute 1003.46, throughout instruction in Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, sexually transmitted diseases, or health education, when such instruction and course material contains instruction in human sexuality, a school shall:
a.       Teach abstinence from sexual activity outside of marriage as the expected standard for all school-age children while teaching the benefits of monogamous heterosexual marriage….”
The Board is currently conducting a survey of parents, students, and community members to collect data as they prepare to vote on whether or not teaching abstinence as the expected standard will continue or whether our schools will teach “abstinence plus” which includes education on birth control, more extensive education on sexually transmitted diseases, and human sexuality issues.
The Sex Education Survey may be completed through the following links. Students in grades 6-12 will be completing the survey in school on either March 22 or March 23. The parent and community surveys are open through Friday, March 25 at 5:00 p.m.
Parents who do not wish for their child to take the survey should complete the form. The form should be returned to the student’s 2nd period teacher.
All students, parents, and community members are invited to a PUBLIC forum on Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. to share information, opinions, and ideas.
