Florida's school choice programs ensure that no child will be left behind by allowing parents to choose the best educational setting—public or private—for their child. The McKay Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities provided over 28,000 Florida students with special needs the opportunity to attend a participating private school during the 2013-14 school year. The McKay Scholarships Program also offers parents public school choice. A parent of an eligible special needs student may choose to transfer the student to another public school.
Because your child has an IEP or 504 they may be eligible to participate in the McKay Scholarship Program. By participating in this program your child may be able to attend a different public school in your district, an adjacent district or a private school.
After a parent files intent to participate in the McKay program, a letter from Florida School Choice is sent to the parent that includes the student’s intent confirmation number and intent date. A brochure “Next Steps for Parents Filing for John M. McKay Scholarship” will also be enclosed. The brochure includes instructions for choosing a participating private school or requesting public school McKay options from the district. The brochure can also be found online.
