Are you within walking or biking distance from school? This week, schools across the region will celebrate International Walk to School Day. It's an annual event - this year on Oct. 5 - that's intended to encourage families to consider commuting to school by foot. Students who live close to schools and are not eligible for school bus service can benefit by participating in programs that provide safe, healthful alternatives to transportation in private cars. Schools benefit, too, from decreased traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon, decreased demand for parking, and more energetic, healthy students who arrive at school ready to learn. Find out how to start a Walking School Bus program in your area at: http://www.walkingschoolbus.org
