About Pass
Flagler Palm Coast High School's Peer Academic Support System (P.A.S.S.) is a comprehensive peer-to-peer academic support model designed to provide an additional level of curricular support for students struggling with academic and/or social skills. The model is based on a peer-to-peer student empowerment framework comprised of four components: peer tutoring, peer mentoring, peer coaching and peer mediation.
While adult and peer tutoring and adult and peer mentoring are in varying stages of implementation within academic programs and school clubs at FPC, the focus of this project is to develop, implement and market Peer Coaching and Peer Mediation as part of FPCHS's peer facilitated transition program to help struggling (Level 1 and Level 2) ninth grade students. To support our freshmen class, thirty students including seniors, juniors and sophomores will be recruited and trained as peer leaders in the areas of communication skills, mediation techniques, dealing with difficult situations, and cultural diversity. The Peer Coaching and Peer Mediation curriculum is being created using proven materials from the CRU Institute, which "was founded in 1987 for the purpose of helping young people develop and use self-mediation and alternative dispute resolution skills at school and in their daily lives."
Three Goals of P.A.S.S.
- Develop and implement the Peer Coaching component of FPC's P.A.S.S. Model to ensure a smooth transition for struggling, Level 1, and Level 2 ninth grade students.
- Develop and implement the Peer Mediation-Conflict Resolution component of FPC's P.A.S.S. Model to empower struggling, Level 1, and Level 2 ninth grade students to deal more effectively with difficult social and academic situations.
- Enable web-design and graphic design students to market FPC's newly created interactive web-based Student Success Network (Webpage), highlighting the Peer Coaching and Peer Mediation components of the P.A.S.S. Model, to increase student academic engagement among struggling, Level 1, and Level 2 ninth grade students.
