In the Spotlight

9/11 POETRY CONTEST

Brittany Cunningham, 11th Grade

A PLUME OF SMOKE SMOTHERING THE SKY
CHANGING THAT BEAUTIFUL BLUE TO A SOMBERING GRAY
YOU SEE IT UNFOLD IN SLOW MOTION:
THE TOWERS AGAISNT THAT BLUE BACKDROP, STANDING STRONG
THEN A PLANE SHOOTS INTO THE SCENE,
CRASHING INTO THOSE TOWERS
THUS SMOLDERING THE SKY IN GRAY
BEEPING HORNS, ANGRY WORDS, THE BARKING OF DOGS
MAKE UP THE EVERYDAY CACOPHONY OF THE STREET
ADD TO THE MIX THE SOUND OF AN EXPLOSION
THE CRACKLE OF FIRE
THE SCREAMING OF SIRENS
AND YOU KNOW SOMETHING’S WRONG
IN THE WAKE OF TRAGEDY, YOU HAVE TO FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE, THE GOOD
IT’S WHAT MAKES IT ALL MAKE SENSE
YOU SEE THE DILIGENT RESCUE TEAMS FORGE INTO THE BUILDING
RESCUING THOSE IN NEED
THEY NEVER WORRY ABOUT THE RISL
THEIR MAIN FOCUS IS SAVING LIVES
OR HOW ABOUT THE INJURED, BUT ABLE
THEY STAY IN THE RUBBLE TO HELP THE OTHERS
THAT’S WHAT BEING AN AMERICAN IS ALL ABOUT
DETERMINATION, HOPE, SACRAFICE
AND SEVEN YEARS LATER
WE’VE STILL GOT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: OUR PRIDE
YOU CAN DAMAGE US;
WEAKEN US WITH BLOWS, HIRT US WITH WORDS,
EVEN CRASH A PLANE INTO OUR HEARTS.
BUT YOU’LL NEVER DEFEAT US.
WE ARE STRONG.
WE ARE PROUD.
WE ARE AMERICAN
WE PUT OUR HANDS OVER OUR HEARTS
WHEN WE SEE THAT RED, WHITE, AND BLUE
