As soon as she heard the word in the Championship Round, Old Kings Elementary School 5th grader Addison Davis knew she had won. “Renovate” won her the 2019 Flagler County Spelling Bee, but it was “pretzel,” which threw her for a brief second in the round to get her to the championship. “You mean the food?” she asked Flagler Schools Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Diane Dyer, who was the official pronouncer for the bee.

Runner-up in this year’s Spelling Bee was Chevaney Chandradat, a 6th grader from Belle Terre Elementary School. She pushed Addison through seven rounds Wednesday night in the cafeteria of Wadsworth Elementary School.

Addison admitted to doing very little preparation for the spelling bee. “I’ve got to be honest. I really didn’t start looking at the words until about four days ago. There were some words I spelled tonight that I don’t think I ever saw.” She credits her love of reading when it comes to spelling though.

Addison’s parents, Lesley and Josh Davis admit it was not easy watching quietly from the audience. Says Lesley, “I think they should put a warning out for the parents on just how nerve wracking it is to watch them stand up and do this. I had no idea.” Josh Davis adds, “I thought I was going to pass out. I’m just so proud...as proud as I can possibly be.”

Addison goes on to the 75th Annual First Coast Regional Spelling Bee next month at Jacksonville University, in Jacksonville.
