2020 Sunshine State Scholars Named
Posted on 02/05/2020

Flagler Schools congratulates Flagler Palm Coast High School's Jack Moffatt for being named this year's Sunshine State Scholar and Matanzas High School's Portia Ludwig as the alternate.

Jack is in FPC's International Baccalaureate program and loves everything about math. In his application he writes, "Today, I am the Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta for my school and the head statistics coach. I train this year’s competitors and enlighten them with all the tricks I’ve picked up from my hours of practice. I continue to self-study and have an insatiable thirst for knowledge (clearly demonstrated by the hundreds of math videos in my YouTube history). The concept of ‘passion’ itself can be difficult to quantify. It is deeply rooted in human emotions, which tend to be fickle. Of course, I am passionate about mathematics, but just saying that is simply a disservice to the hours I’ve invested. Mathematics is a fundamental part of who I am, and I am wholly committed to exploring the wondrous elegance and beauty it contains."

As for Portia, she writes, "My passion for academics really began with my parents. They always encouraged my brother and I to do our best and they pushed us to work to the best of our abilities. These past few years their efforts have shown in that my expectations of myself are now higher than what they ask of me and I hold myself to a higher standard. I work hard because I understand the importance of education and the ability for excellent grades to lead to a prestigious college, a dream job, a successful career, and a stable life; all of which are achievements I strive for. My passion for academics stems from my determination to pave the best future for myself."

Both Jack and Portia are active out of the classroom as well, with memberships in a variety of academic and service clubs and organizations.

The Sunshine State Scholar program takes 11th graders in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and gathers them together for an amazing two-day program in Orlando.

The Flagler County School Board will honor both Jack and Portia at the February business meeting on February 18th, 6:00pm in the Government Services Building in Bunnell.
