The Flagler Education Support Professional Association teamed up with a number of community donors to help bring Thanksgiving dinner baskets to four-dozen families who work with Flagler Schools. These families would have struggled if not for the generosity of their fellow union members and the community at large.

FESPA Vice President of membership Mrs. Lakisha Ayers-White had the idea for the Gobble Basket event and spent the past two years setting up this event. It was supposed to be held last November, but everyone decided to put it on hold while Flagler County was in the midst of a COVID surge.

Gobble Basket“We have many members that struggle to provide for their families during the holidays. My goal was to make sure as many families that needed the help got it so that no one would go hungry during Thanksgiving,” says Mrs. Ayers-White “To see the emotions in their eyes as we were giving them a small bit of hope, really got to me too.”

Several volunteers were from the Flagler-Palm Coast High School Starlets group. “I think having the students here really shows how much of a community effort we were able to put together," says Brun Hudson, President of FESPA. “I give all the credit to Lakisha. She put this whole thing together. I’m just here as well as all the other volunteers to support her."

Cheryl MassaroAlong with the Starlets, several Flagler Schools teachers, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, and community members showed up to volunteer to put the baskets together, and hand deliver them down to each family's vehicle. School Board member Cheryl Massaro volunteered her time to check people in, and Food Services Director Angie Bush and Transportation Director Dontarrious Rowls lent a hand in passing out the Thanksgiving dinners.

“The greatest thing about all of this is that 100% of these dinners were put together with community donations. I am overjoyed by how much our community came together for this event,” says Mrs. Ayers-White.
